Women’s and Family Issues
Representative Cynthia Thielen is a powerful advocate for women’s and family issues:
- FOR THE OHANA: Cynthia promotes measures for affordable housing and improving our economy, making it possible for our children and grandchildren to be able to afford to stay in Hawaii.
- FOR THE KEIKI AND KUPUNA: Cynthia is a founding member of the bipartisan Keiki and Kupuna Caucuses, and former Co-Chair of the Women’s Caucus, working with Legislators to pass bills ranging from preventing schoolyard bullying, to Amber Alert for seniors, to curbing human trafficking and domestic violence.
- FOR THE STUDENTS: Cynthia is in our schools throughout the year, helping students to learn and get involved through programs like her Legislative Roadshow and Project Kanu.
- FOR ALL OF US: Cynthia cosponsored Act 59, legislation designed to bring down the high cost of prescription medication. Her HB 1602 to curb opioid addiction became law in June.
Representative Cynthia Thielen works for all of us as an effective and experienced legislator for District 50, Kailua and Kaneohe Bay.
“The environment is what we leave for our children. How we treat it, what we take from it, what we leave – that is our legacy to our children.” Rep. Cynthia Thielen
Cynthia advocates for the health and preservation of our environment – from protecting our shorelines and open spaces, to keeping another landfill out of Kailua near Kawainui Marsh, and achieving the designation of the marsh as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. Her background as an environmental attorney is a valuable asset to us in the political arena.
Cynthia has championed the effort to make Hawaii an energy-independent state, successfully promoting clean, renewable energy using our abundance of wind, solar, and ocean resources.
The Sierra Club endorses Representative Cynthia Thielen for her environmental leadership and advocacy. She’s consistently voted for the environment in the legislature, and now she needs us to vote for her on August 9th.
Public Safety and Public Education
Representative Thielen is a problem solver and an effective proponent of safe communities. Hawaii Fire Fighters endorse her re-election, and ask that you support her.
Good schools, equipped with the resources they need and supported by the communities that use them, are essential to the growth of our keiki and shape the character of our society. Rep. Thielen works with students at local schools every year during her Legislative Roadshow, discussing legislation that will affect them and taking their responses back to the Legislature. She supports reducing the teacher-to-student ratio, giving students and teachers the books and equipment they need, and has even joined in the work to renovate classrooms.
Rep. Thielen actively helped to cool the second floor classroom of the late Mary Kate Powers, a beloved teacher. Rep. Thielen worked with Revolusun to obtain a photo-voltaic sun powered system, thereby helping students to learn in a cooled environment.
She has consistently and strongly advocated for students, teachers and public education through legislation. UHPA and teachers continue to support her re-election.
Taxes and the Economy
High prices and increased taxes are hurting our residents, escalating property taxes being a prime example. Hawaii is among the most heavily taxed communities in the nation. Rep. Thielen has co-sponsored legislation to alleviate the tax burden on our working families and retirees. The general excise tax on food and over-the-counter health care supplies should be eliminated. She is building support in the Legislature for this tax relief.
